The ‘Beast from the East’ Halts the Great British Spring Clean

The Great British Spring Clean has been halted by the so-called ‘Beast from the East’ which brought snow to most of the UK and caused travel chaos and even some fatalities. The yearly campaign, led by Keep Britain Tidy, encourages communities to come together to clean up their towns, villages, countryside, and beaches. But the recent adverse weather has led them to issuing advice to the army of volunteers across the country.

They’re advising people to keep an eye on the weather forecast, and to cancel litter picking events if there are any doubts at all about safety.

Clean up events cancelled across the UK

Brandon, West Suffolk

40 Volunteers were supposed to collect litter as part of their clean up event that was organised by Brandon in Bloom. The event will now take place on 10^th and 11^th March due to concerns about safety and accessibility caused by the weather conditions.

Sedgemoor, Somerset

Litter picks at Apex Park were cancelled due to the poor weather conditions. The clean up was supposed to take place last Friday, but organisers were forced to rearrange due to high winds and snowfall.

A similar event at Burnham-on-Sea beach was also cancelled but organisers have confirmed that it will be rearranged as soon as possible.

Taunton, Somerset

A litter pick organised by the local paper, the County Gazette, and the MP for Taunton Deane, Rebecca Pow has been called off due to bad weather. The paper’s editor said that the weather conditions meant that the event would not be safe for participants. The organisers are hopeful that they can reschedule in a few weeks.

But there’s always one plucky bunch...

Despite the snow and the weather forecast telling us that winter is not quite done with us yet, residents in Petersfield were determined to keep calm and carry on with their litter pick. Their event went ahead last Friday and had the full support of the town council. And if anyone needed an incentive, everyone who took part in the event got free chips!
