One of the major roles to Keep Columbus Beautiful is work with communities and partner organisations to develop litter strategies to keep the streets clean, they run a training workshop called Litter is a Crime and teachs how enforcement has been used as a deterrent, thos invited include the Police Department, Sheriff's Office and other community groups.

Rubbish Roundup 15th January

This weeks rubbish roundup included stories from Wolverhampton where there has been a huge increase of fines being given out for littering, RSPCA Cymru and North Wales Wildlife Trust coming together for a hige community beach clean, and a 1 hour litterpick by volunteers collected 16 bags of rubbish in Odsey.

Council Staff Go Undercover to Catch Litterbugs

Five councils in Wales have admitted they would use undercover staff to help them catch people who litter and dog foul.  Many councils already use litter enforcement officers, businesses have commented to the council that plain clothed officers are creating a bad atmosphere in the town.

The Seaside Restaurant Giving you Free Coffee if you Pick up Litter

The Noisy Lobster in Bournemouth are inviting visitors to collect a bucket of litter in exchange for a free coffee.  Influenced by the programme Blue Planet highlighting plastic damage in oceans, the owner has said that they serve seafood which comes straight from the local waters so they have more of a reason to keep the beach and waters clean from litter.

Why Dell are Using Ocean Plastics in Their Packaging

Dell have joined forces wityh an environmental organisation called Lonely Whale to form a new iniative called NextWave, to reduce ocean plastics by collecting and processing plastics to make new products and new packaging.  Dell are using the recycled plastic to make packaging for their laptops.

One of the most noticeable stories to appear this week is an environmental charity in London which is taking children out fishing in the River Thames to collect plastic from the water.  They are going out in a boat called the Poly-mer which is made from 99% recycled plastic including 8000 bottles.

Single Use Plastic Blamed for Rise in Beach Litter

Beach litter rose by 10% last year and a fifth of this was made up of single use items such as cups, plastic bottles and plastic cutlery.  The Marine Conservation Society is calling for a tax on single use plastic items to help tackle this problem, they say the introduction of the 5p bag had a huge effect on the number of plastic bags ending up in the ocean so it could be an idea for other plastic products.
