Dumfries and Galloway Council Remove Bins to Deter Littering

Dumfries and Galloway are trying something new to tackle litter louts, they are going to be removing bins, the council have claimed that there is evidence that proves taking away bins from litter hotspots can actually encourage people to take their litter home.  In replacement of the bins the council are going to be putting up signs encouraging people to take their waste home.

To deal with the growing problem of litter in Los Angeles, the city council are considering plans to employ the cities homeless people to clear up rubbish from the streets.  Each day the council gets a reported 200 complaints a day and is in the top 3 issues reported to the council.

Litter is a massive problem on the roadside, estimates suggest it costs around £850 million per year to clean up rubbish throughout the UK, motorways and roads are notorious for litter, to combat this a new funnel bin has been installed in some locations to encourage drivers to dispose of their rubbish in the correct manor instead of just throwing it from their car window onto the ground they can not throw into a new funnel bin.

The deposit return scheme looks to be edging nearer for implementation in Scotland, customers who buy a plastic bottle will pay an extra charge on the item and then receive a refund.  It has been successful in countries such as Germany and parts of Scandavia.

Littering is a crime in the UK and cash strapped councils are looking to private companies to enforce the Environmental Protection Act.  One of these enforcement companies is called Kingdom, whos officers are paid a competency allowance for every 4 fines, so do they go out of their way to fine people?

Keep Scotland Beautiful has estimated that the cost of clearing up litter in Scotland is somewhere in the region of £100 million per year, Aberdeen is part of the national campaign to help get 1 million people involved in helping clear up litter and improve the look in their local area.

With the litter fines in full force across the country, is there a case for dashcam footage to catch offenders who dispose of litter whilst they are driving.  A lot of vehicles have dashcams installed so authorities in Omagh in Northern Ireland have decided to fit their enforcement vehicles with cameras to try to catch culprits and use the evidence in court.

Music festivals have a record of leaving an incredible amount of rubbish after revellers have gone home, and some festival organisers have gone further than tackling the litter problem, an example of this is the Sunrise Celebration which uses 100% renewable energy  and solar powered showers.

Flytipping is on the rise, but why?  Last year flytipping increased by 50%, this was down to some cash strapped councils implementing charges for the collection of waste, in one case Barnet Council charge almost £48 for a single collection rising to £185.  Despite there being so many flytipping cases only 0.2% were prosecuted.
