Council Staff Go Undercover to Catch Litterbugs

Five councils in Wales have admitted they would use undercover staff to help them catch people who litter and dog foul.  Many councils already use litter enforcement officers, businesses have commented to the council that plain clothed officers are creating a bad atmosphere in the town.

There were over 1 million fly-tipping incidents in 2016-2017 with a total cost of around £58 million to cash strapped councils, the majority of the cases involved household waste.  Organisations such as Keep Britain Tidy are calling for councils to educate people about waste, keep recycling centres open and proescute fly tippers.

Global Fight Against Litter - Scotland

Scotland are encouraging all businesses and local councils to join a campaign to help prevent littering and flytipping across the country.  Zero Waste Scotland say taxpayers are currently paying over £50 million per year and that 15,000 tonnes of litter is discarded in Scotland each year.

Nappies can take as long as 500 years to decompose when sent to landfill as well as leaking toxins into the underground.  To make a nappy it takes wood pulp as well as crude oil.  To dispose correctly the nappy should be sealed from the tabs and placed into a sealed nappy bag.

Philadelphia has generated the nickname filthadelphiao because of it's problem with litter, on average each resident disposes of 1 ton of litter per year.  The city has committed to the Zero Waste and Litter Executive Order which sets a goal of achieving zero waste by 2035.
