Cardboard Recycling Bins: An Environmentally Friendly and Low-Cost Recycling Solution

If you run or manage a business and you aren’t recycling, you’re missing a trick. Not only is recycling much better for the environment, but it also helps you save on waste management costs and improves your reputation with customers and clients.

In this blog, we’re going to talk cardboard recycling, why it’s worth it, and how our cardboard recycling bins can help you take care of your recyclable waste.

So what’s the deal with cardboard?

Cardboard is one of the easiest materials to recycle and most cardboard contains a high amount of recycled fibres. It’s mostly used in packaging because it’s sturdy and versatile.

The business benefits of recycling cardboard

We agree that it takes more time and effort to recycle some materials, but cardboard is one of the easiest materials to store and recycle. As well as saving you money on waste management and the benefits it has for your reputation (not to mention it helps you comply with the law), recycling your cardboard can also be a nice little earner. As long as your cardboard is clean, dry, and free from grease and contamination, it can be put into bales and sold.

Recycling different types of cardboard

Different types of cardboard can be recycled together as long as it’s not contaminated. Thin cardboard can be recycled alongside paper. Pizza boxes can be recycled as long as they aren’t greasy or contaminated with food (forget about recycling it if your go-to order is deep pan pepperoni!). Tetra Pak cardboard is mostly made of paper, but sometimes it’s coated with plastic and can even contain metal. As a result, it can’t be recycled with normal cardboard, but specialist recycling facilities are opening up all of the time.

How should I prepare cardboard for recycling?

Make sure it’s clean and dry, and remove any excess tape you can see. Removing it all isn’t necessary. Flatten it and store it in a container or recycling bin where it will be kept dry.

What happens to cardboard when I send it for recycling?

When it reaches the recycling centre, the cardboard is sorted into flat sheets and corrugated sheets. The cardboard is then shredded into small pieces and mixed with water and chemicals. The cardboard will look like sludge/pulp at this point. The pulp is then mixed with pulp made from wood chips, and the new mixture is filtered and treated to remove any tape, metals, plastics, or ink. The purified pulp is then dried and pressed into long sheets which are glued together to make completely new cardboard.

The new cardboard is then turned into new packaging and lots of other useful things, like our cardboard recycling bins.
