Sustainable Street Party

Sustainable Street Party

When summer comes around, there’ll likely be street parties galore to celebrate the Kings coronation. One thing that might put a dampener on the festivities, however, is the amount of litter and waste they'll create. Here are our top tips for a sustainable street party.

Plastic is the Party Pooper

Now we all love a good celebration and if the sun is shining (hopefully) it should be an occasion to remember. However, don’t let the festivities make you forget how important it is to be sustainable.

Don’t rely on single-use plastic cutlery, plates, and bowls. Don’t fall back on plastic bunting or tablecloths. Have a sustainable street party that wages war on the plastic problem.

Tips for Having a Sustainable Street Party

Ditch Single-Use Cutlery and Crockery

Street parties are all about community. So why not get together with your neighbours and ask everyone to bring some cutlery, crockery, and glasses? You can even share the washing up! If you’re still falling short, invest in some extra bits and pieces from charity shops. Donating to a good cause and doing good for the environment, what’s not to love?

Make DIY Bunting

You can’t have a sustainable street party with plastic bunting that’s probably going to end up in a landfill. Why not make your own bunting from scraps of fabric or old clothing? All you need to do is cut out some fabric triangles and sew them onto a piece of ribbon. Extra points for a red, white, and blue colour scheme!

Reduce Food Waste

Eat, drink, and be merry, but minimise your waste. If there’s any food left over after the festivities, make sure people take it home. Alternatively, if there are any items that haven’t been opened, you might be able to donate them to a food bank.

Speaking of food, veggies and dips, fruit skewers, and anything locally sourced are sustainable choices. Homemade food based on seasonal fruit and veg is always a winner too. Strawberry tart or Eton Mess? Don’t mind if we do! Why not ask every family to bring something they’ve made to cut down on shop-bought waste?

Make Plans for Recycling and Litter

Proper recycling and litter disposal facilities will make for a truly sustainable street party. Create a recycling station for all those beer bottles and soft drink cans. Nominate people to take charge of making sure the litter is collected and disposed of correctly. This can make all the difference.

We don’t want to be party poopers, but you can eat, drink, and be merry without leaving a trail of litter behind.
